Mental wellbeing and social impact in Kenya

Nyumba Yetu × Ndumberi VTC

Community Day 1 Building trust through shared experience

Sport, recreation and conversation brought 121 students, trainers and community partners together—creating an energetic first step towards connection, participation and belonging.

12 June 2026 Ndumberi VTC, Kiambu County

02 · Why the day mattered

Trust had to come before deeper engagement.

Nyumba Yetu had not come to Ndumberi VTC simply to deliver another wellbeing talk. Before asking students to reflect honestly or staff to use a new support process, we needed to reduce relational distance.

Community Day 1 gave students, trainers and the Nyumba Yetu team a low-pressure way to meet through shared activity. The day was designed to establish familiarity, demonstrate respect and make future participation feel safer.

Trust is not the outcome of the work. It is the condition that makes the next stage of the work possible.

03 · The Community Day experience

Different activities created different ways to belong.

The programme mixed structured competition with open recreation. Students could contribute through skill, teamwork, encouragement, humour or simply the willingness to join in.

01

Community football

Student teams brought energy, coordination and a strong sense of shared purpose.

02

Volleyball

An open social activity encouraged communication, cooperation and wider participation.

03

Tug-of-war

Students and trainers experienced teamwork and collective effort beyond their usual roles.

04

Recreation and play

Sack races and physical challenges introduced spontaneity, laughter and freedom to participate.

04 · What we observed

Early indicators of engagement—not proof of long-term change.

Community Day 1 was a trust-building activity, not a clinical intervention or formal outcome evaluation. The observations below describe what was visible on the day and the institutional response that followed.

01

Students participated actively

They joined activities, supported teams and remained engaged throughout the programme.

02

Usual roles became less rigid

Trainers joined students in activity, creating informal contact beyond classroom relationships.

03

Students chose to remain

Participants stayed longer than they ordinarily would, showing sustained interest in the shared experience.

04

Institutional openness increased

The principal requested another Community Day, signalling confidence in continuing the trust-building process.

Evidence boundary These observations suggest readiness for deeper engagement. They do not establish improved mental health, sustained behaviour change or clinical effectiveness.

05 · What this made possible

The day earned permission for the work to continue.

The most valuable result was not the activities themselves. It was a stronger foundation for the next stage of the Ndumberi VTC pilot.

  1. 01
    Continued relationship-building

Students and staff now had a shared point of experience with Nyumba Yetu.

  2. 02
    Greater institutional confidence

Leadership was more open to continued collaboration and a second Community Day.

  3. 03
    A safer route towards reflection

Future wellbeing engagement could begin from familiarity rather than from a cold introduction.

  4. 04
    Operational learning

Nyumba Yetu gained practical evidence about participation, trust-building and what needed testing next.
