Addiction Recovery in Kenya: Case NY/TC/001 Gives New Hope
From Rock Bottom to Restoration: A Recovery Story Begins
Addiction recovery in Kenya is often viewed as an uphill battle—underfunded, misunderstood, and too often ignored. At Nyumba Yetu, we’re changing that. This blog introduces Case NY/TC/001, our first documented recovery story. It’s not about perfection. It’s about possibility.
We’ll call him “K.”
K represents the untold story of countless men in Kenya. A story of silent struggle and buried trauma. He’s the face of resilience. The beginning of something different.
K’s Story: A Mirror to Many Men
K once lived with purpose. A man from a dignified family. But like many, he slipped quietly into addiction as pressure mounted and support systems failed him.
At the time we met him, he stood near a rusted mabati wall in Kiambu County—tattered, worn, and alone. But he stood. And that told us all we needed to know: something inside him hadn’t given up.
The Holistic Recovery Model at Nyumba Yetu
We don’t believe in quick fixes. At Nyumba Yetu, recovery is a process that addresses the body, mind, and spirit—three dimensions that must heal together.
- Body: Access to nutrition, hygiene, rest, and basic medical care
- Mind: Counseling (group and individual), self-reflection, and emotional regulation
- Spirit: Daily devotionals, values clarification, and purpose-driven routines
This holistic model provides not just sobriety—but sustainable transformation.

Partnering with Turitu Care in Kiambu
To bring this framework to life, we partnered with Turitu Care, a community-based recovery centre located in Turitu, Kiambu County. Led by visionary John Kibuna Munyingi, the centre emphasizes respect, routine, and reintegration.
Their calm environment and personalized support make them the ideal partner for piloting our model in real-life conditions.
How Case NY/TC/001 is Structured
From June 1 to August 31, 2025, K will follow a 3-month recovery plan that includes:
- Nutrition, hygiene, and exercise
- Structured daily routines
- Counseling and journaling
- Voice reflections and weekly check-ins
His progress is tracked weekly using our internal tracker, with milestones celebrated and lessons logged.
Why This Case Matters for Addiction Recovery in Kenya
This isn’t just K’s story—it’s a mirror to Kenya’s addiction crisis. Many men are silently unraveling, and families are watching helplessly. Traditional responses to addiction often rely on shame or punishment. That has to change.
This pilot case is our proof-of-concept. It’s how we learn, improve, and build something scalable—something local, culturally grounded, and genuinely effective.
What Comes Next?

- Monthly reviews to measure emotional, mental, and physical progress
- Final reporting and learnings to shape Case NY/TC/002
We’re not rushing results. We’re building something that lasts.

Final Word: One Case, A Thousand Doors
K’s story won’t stay silent.
It will speak to other men who thought they were alone.
It will speak to families who’ve been praying in the dark.
And it will guide us as we build better systems.
Addiction recovery in Kenya doesn’t need imported solutions.
It needs homegrown ones—with heart, structure, and the belief that no one is beyond help.
Because every home—every home—deserves hope.
